This FREE course could be brilliant. I haven't heard Steve Evitts play guitar for two years now. He played with us to-day and was a different player. He said he had taken the FREE online course devised by Gary Burton for Berklee Univsersity. He swears by it. I went to their website. It tells you next to nothing.
Look, jazz people, LEARN TO USE PERSUASION effectively.
The main website title does NOT tell you it is about a free online jazz course, it says something about partnering with Coursera, whoever the hell that is. The website does not tell you anything about it, what language, how long, how the course works. It is full of blah de blah de blah about millions of successful students in hundreds of words. You have to fight your way through this abbatoir of dead language to get to the live meat. Then there isn't any. Believe it or not if you now click to the recommended Berklee music link they are switch-selling you to their paid-for courses.
To find the right page you have to add "Gary Burton" to your websearch.
Yeah, you are right, I'm cross about how inept you jazz people are when you try anything that is not jazz related. Such as writing persuasive messages.
In direct mail, or email, or websites, you've got a few seconds to win their attention.
What you need to put across immediately is benefit, benefit, benefit, then how it is achieved, then costs, then a final benefit plus an incentive to act now. You have three minutes in all.
You edit, then re-write, then edit again. And you've got to give them all the information they need to know in one hit.
Free Berklee Jazz course online
This is the link you need. Now click on Gary Burton's introductory video and IT TELLS YOU NOTHING
I learnt more about the course in two minutes from Steve than from their website. (You get your performance evaluated for a start.)
Gary Burton playing and teaching jazz for years, huge credits and Awards to his name, plays often with Chick Corea has created this online course for Berklee University Jazz.
I still don't know even now if the course is suitable for every instrument, because Burton just mentions guitar and bass and includes comping as a subject. I suspect that it is suitable, though.
Take the course, you'll be a better player.

How to play a BASS solo
Bass players are not used to playing melodies. This video is very good for helping with advice, and example. A solo is just a melody, as he says. So create a little melody. I personally always admire bass soloists who touch the melody here and there, maybe with a repeated phrase.

GOOD JAZZ SINGERS WORKSHOP
I've been trying to find a youtube video about jazz workshops where they are not all asleep, far too advanced (Berklee ugh), or dead (most of them) What is it with workshops? Why can't they have the sort of fun that we have in ours. No, I'm serious. We are laughing all the time. But this singing tutor girl is good. CAROLYN LEONHART. She's married to Wayne Escoffery, tenor player. Jazz runs in the family, Dad is a bass player, brother is a trumpeter. Watch out Marsalis family. If she has two jazz children you'll be outnumbered.

ENCLOSURES. SWEET AND EASY WAY TO CHROMATICS
This is for any solo instrument.
Notice that he does it on the chord tones. That is quite important, because it can sound like a gruesome clash if you don't resolve it properly. I'm not saying you don't want a gruesome clash sometimes, indeed in my own playing .......oh never mind. Joke is too obvious.
